Ice Hits Close to Home

Linda Davis, beloved teacher.

As terrible as some things are, we fool ourselves into thinking that they are too distant from us to impact us. Minneapolis is many hours and states away from where I live. They are mainly targeting Democratic cities, and I live in one of the reddest counties on the planet. Nothing has happened to jar loose any of the 90% who voted for Trump and pals in elections here.

But a terrible tragedy has struck close to home. The madness that is ICE struck in Savannah.   Rather than me stumbling trying to describe what happened, I will let this news story written by Margaret Coker in The Current Ga outline it for you.

"A Chatham County elementary school teacher en route to work early Monday was killed after a man trying to flee federal immigration agents rammed her vehicle on Whitefield Avenue near the Truman Parkway, according to county police.

Linda Davis, a longtime teacher at Herman W. Hesse K-8 School was pulled from her crushed Lexus sedan by emergency personnel but later pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver who allegedly hit her, 38-year-old Oscar Vasquez-Lopez, was arrested by Chatham County Police and charged with homicide and reckless driving, police said.

The fatal collision occurred around 7:20 a.m. less than a half mile from Hesse after agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tried to pull over the vehicle driven by Vasquez-Lopez, according to police and eyewitnesses.

Although Monday was a school holiday, Davis was due to attend teacher training that morning at the elementary school that serves a large number of Spanish-speaking children. Vasquez-Lopez appears to have driven through the red light on Whitefield on the east side of the Truman at such speed that the front and side of Davis' vehicle was crushed, witnesses told The Current GA.

Around 7:30 a.m., before emergency workers arrived at the scene, two masked immigration agents dressed in tactical gear detained one person and ushered him to one of their two vehicles parked along Whitefield Avenue, according to two eyewitnesses. It is unclear if that person was Vasquez-Lopez or someone else.

It is unclear whether federal agents offered any emergency assistance to the special needs teacher. Three eyewitnesses told The Current that they did not see anyone attending the mangled black Lexus before Chatham emergency services arrived at 7:45 a.m. and pried Davis from her vehicle.

Chatham County police said that they had not been aware of any planned immigration enforcement operations on Monday and were not involved in any when the collision occurred."

END Article inclusion

ICE, looking for suspects, apparently decided to harass around an elementary school, began a car chase in an area where they put others at risk. This led to a crash that took Linda Davis's life. The so-called criminal, Vasquez-Lopez, had NO criminal record.* The chase was dangerous and unwarranted.

But this hits even closer to home for us than even Savannah. Two of the witnesses were people we know. I haven't seen their names in print, so I won't name them. One is a lifelong friend of Alison's who grew up in Pierce County. The other is a close friend of one of our church family, and I believe grew up in Ware County. They are both good friends and good people, ones we still see several times a year. They escorted us around Savannah a few years ago and were great hosts, hitting up a lot of the foodie spots.

One of them worked at the school system with Linda Davis. Both of them adored her. Both of them were horrified by what ICE had done.

No one is safe. The horrors of the Trump administration will affect us all.

Even if you think the undocumented are a problem that needs to be dealt with, I think you have to agree that this is not the way to go about it. Too many innocents are being killed or wounded, many others are having their lives and families disrupted, and some are just disappearing to God knows where.

Remember, being undocumented is a civil offense, not a criminal one. THE UNDOCUMENTED ARE NOT CRIMINALS.

If you live in Southeast Georgia, you should be looking at The Current GA. Please search for it or link it to your social media. There are few truly independent, investigative news sources left. We should cherish those that we can find.

Until next time.

Kaleidoscope Not Required: Saturday Political Soap Box 302

I admit it.

Alison and I watch and read a lot of True Crime. I'm not going to explain or justify it. That's for another post. Just accept it as a backdrop for this blog entry.

One of the bizarre cases we've read and watched is The Yogurt Shop Murders, where four teenage females were killed while closing down for the night at a TCBY (This Can't Be Yogurt) shop at a strip mall in Austin, Texas. This was in 1991.

No one has been caught. Every few years, the case is looked at again. Every time, they twist the kaleidoscope and come up with a different view. Every time we think we have it figured out, a twist of the kaleidoscope will turn up something else, and we're lost and confused as to what really happened.

This can apply to many true crime cases, including the 2005 Tifton area murder of Tara Grinstead, the assassination of JFK (many people have made a lot of money twisting the kaleidoscope on that one), just to name two examples.

But not all crime looks different in the kaleidoscope. Some answers remain the same no matter how you taste.

No matter how you twist the kaleidoscope, the answer always remains the same -

Ice Agent Jonathan Ross murdered a young mother in cold blood.

IN. ICE. COLD. BLOOD.

We're Running Out of Time

For the first time, I am doing the reverse of what I usually do - instead of first posting this as a blog entry, I wrote directly on Facebook. Yes, it received much more reaction than when I try to post my blog directly onto Facebook.

I am putting it here now for my handful of readers who go directly to the blog. You will always be first in my heart!

We're running out of time.

We may have a week to ten days, and it will be too late by then.
We're not going to make it three years. We may not even make it this month.
Things are accelerating far too fast.
Minneapolis is under attack RIGHT NOW. People are dying RIGHT NOW. What happened to Renae Good is, tragically, just the beginning.
The Venezuelan takeover was not just horrible; it made no sense whatsoever. The oil is not wanted, not at the cost of developing it. It is the beginning of an evil dream to dominate and exploit ALL the people in the Western hemisphere, not for the benefit of the American people, but for Trump and a handful of his billionaire buddies.
The biggest nightmare right now is Greenland, and how Trump wants to take it over. For the same reasons as Venezuela, for the exploitation of resources to benefit the few. If he does this, it will trigger World War III. And this time, we'll be the bad guys. We'll be fighting our own alliance - NATO.
He is marching towards this. I wish it were a joke, just his usual bluster. But we can't count on that. Too much is at stake. I have already read that many children in Greenland are terrified and have trouble sleeping at night. Trump supporters - THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE LED US TO.
We may have a week or two before we are on a course that we cannot reverse.
Impeachment is too slow. The 25th Amendment is not likely. And JD Vance waits in the wings.
We need Republicans to pass a measure that makes it clear he can't invade any NATO country or ally. We need it NOW.
Most importantly, we need someone to make the ultimate sacrifice. Someone who knows and can do so to release the unredacted Epstein Files.
I'm open to other ideas, but it has to happen FAST.
We're running out of time.

Halloween On ICE

October 31, 2026

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

They thought he wouldn't track them. But he was a deer hunter, trained in the art of tracking prey.

Those skills were enhanced by Addy's phone. At least, until the signal stopped.

It seemed like a good idea. Walking the streets of Milwaukee, hopping into different parties at bars and nightclubs. Looking for the ones with the freakiest costumes and music.

They left their third party, hearing tell of one that was the creepiest yet, a haunted building in a sketchy part of the city. Walking there was not as bad as they were led to believe. Until three masked men drove up in a van, jumped out, and abducted Addy. He was hit over the head and left lying dazed on the ground.

They had made a fatal mistake. Eddy was not like everyone else. They were messing with the wrong hombre.

---------------------

"Jesus Christ! Won't that bitch ever shut up?"  This seemed like a good idea to have a little fun, but she wouldn't stop squaloring. "Maybe we should just gag her!"

His compatriot shook his head. "Nah! No one's gonna hear her." The three of them had her zip-tied to a chair in an abandoned warehouse, surrounded by a failed industrial park. "Besides, I love it when they fight back."

"You're making a huge mistake!" Addy cried out. "I'm an American!"

"Oh, yeah?" snarled the heaviest set one. None of them was very fit, but the one snarling was the worst. Sitting in a booth at Waffle House would be an impossibility for him. "Prove it!"

"Let me out, and I can get the papers to show you."

"Ha! Whatever you could get would be fake. Just like your Snow White costume!" They laughed.

The one in the Zorro mask spoke up. "You're no more Snow White than that Latino bitch who played her in that woke Disney trash!"

Addy was a light brown woman who looked Latino. "My father was from Mexico, yes, but I was born here in Wisconsin. My mother's family has been here for generations. Please, you're making a mistake.

They laughed. One whose face was covered by a bandana said, "Not possible. ICE doesn't make mistakes. Prepare to be...deported!"

They had descended into yelping hysterics. This was just fun and games to them. ICE was in Milwaukee to "monitor" early voting, intimidating any voter whom they suspected was not a citizen. And boy, did that cast a pretty wide net! The idea was to make people in certain voting districts so intimidated that they wouldn't try to vote. Some hoped that people attempting to vote would strike back, giving the President the excuse to declare martial law and void the election altogether. There was a strong likelihood that the Democrats would reclaim Congress, and that just couldn't be allowed to happen.

But these three agents found the work pretty boring. It was hard to do too much with poll watchers and the press around (what little independent media still existed—oh, there was still work to do in that regard). So, with the noise and chaos of Halloween night, they thought this was the perfect excuse to have a little fun.

"Maybe she has her papers hidden under her costume," chortled the obese one.

They started to pull at her costume. She screamed. "Eddy! Eddy! Please come! I need you!" It was like a prayer that she feared would never be answered.

But then it was. The warehouse door burst open. There was Eddy, in his glorious slasher outfit.

"Who are you?" Zorro asked.

He had on a mask, a mask that for all the world looked like human skin. In his hands was a chainsaw. Eddy proclaimed, in an unaturally high, cartoony voice, "Unhand her and bring her to me. I can't be responsible for what happens if you don't."

"Are you effing insane, Mickey Mouse?" said the one in the bandana face covering. He brought out a nightstick, as did one of the others. The third pulled out a taser. "Who's gonna stop us? You? Sissy man with a toy chainsaw?"

He revved up the chainsaw. "Not a toy."

ICE melted.

Alligator Alcatraz: A Concentration of Evil

Alligator Alcatraz is a concentration camp. To pretend anything otherwise is a willful reflection of callousness and uncaring. To feign ignorance is a high level of ostrich-like head-in-the-sandism, as it defies all reason and logic.

An article by an expert in concentration camps, Andrea Pitzer, their development and history - her words, from an article entitled Don't Call it "Alligator Alcatraz" Call it a Concentration Camp -

This facility's purpose fits the classic model: mass civilian detention without real trials targeting vulnerable groups for political gain based on ethnicity, race, religion or political affiliation rather than for crimes committed. And its existence points to serious dangers ahead for the country.

The overcrowding in inhumane cages, without privacy, without any respect for people, stacking an estimated nine bunk beds and eighteen people per cage.

Air conditioning? Maybe. Different sources say different things. Running water and bathroom facilities seem limited at best.

Alligator Alcatraz has already been subject to flooding.

The Miccosukee Tribe, which lives near the facility, is very concerned about its environmental impact, as are others. I know -they make it sound like it's completely isolated - I guess it only counts unless it's conservative white families living nearby.

Much is made of it being surrounded by alligators, pythons, and other predators. Maybe. The worst part of that is having to listen to MAGAs gleeful at the prospects of people at the camps trying to escape and being eaten by gators. To further enhance their cruelty and inhumanity, they are snapping up Alligator Alcatraz merchandise! They want to display and wear their cruelty for all to see. How has this country fallen so low? At least Germans, for all their monstrosity, didn't wear t-shirts celebrating the ovens at Auschwitz.

But the alligators are not the biggest threat. The heat, swarms of mosquitoes and other insects, and the potential for exposure to storms and flooding all make this a perilous environment for housing detainees.

And remember, the detainees, brought in without due process, will often NOT be the hardened criminals you think that they are. ICE, so far, has shown an infinite capacity to sweep up the wrong people, and then has a hard time letting them go. Trump has even talked about revoking citizenship and sending those he simply does not like to places like this.

And the cost is horrendous. 450 million dollars a year for a tent city? And where did the money come from? It's money reallocated from FEMA. You know, the agency that's supposed to help with things like the flooding in Texas? Instead of saving lives, the money is going to be used to destroy lives!

But have no fear. The ICE budget, in the most recent Big Ugly Bill, is receiving dramatic increases, over $100 billion, a larger budget than most other countries' military budgets, and bigger than the budget for the US Marine Corps. It includes $45 billion for the construction of new facilities. Alligator Alcatraz times 90.

"Oh, Tom!" reich wing friends tell me. "It's only a temporary holding! They'll only be there a few days until they're deported!" 1) Deported where? Who's agreed to take them? El Salvador? Some other country that is not their country of origin? So they'll just be transferred to other inhumane facilities? 2) I don't believe for a second that many of them will be there just for a few days. That's not usually the experience with concentration camps. 3) I don't care how long it is. I don't care what the crime or civil offense is. This is NOT the way to treat people. You're trying to turn them into animals that, in your mind, it is ok to treat inhumanely.

Is this Alligator Auschwitz? No, not yet. But the German concentration camps did not start out that way either. The gas ovens were not there at first. But listen carefully about how the MAGAs talk about this - the glee over the potential alligator meals, the delight in the cruelty of it all. The fairest thing to say is we're on that path, but we're not there yet.

Which is why we have to speak out. Many of the German people knew what was coming, but out of fear, acquiescence, or complacency, did not speak out.

We cannot be quiet. Many of us are taught by our faith to care about all people, and that everyone deserves to be treated as we would treat ourselves.

I don't know how much of this nightmare we can stop.

But let's not be silent about it.
