Ripping Good Yarns: The Mostly Amazing Spider-Man 2

I finally see a movie in a timely fashion, early enough to make a review relevant!

While we were in Michigan, Doug And I found a little time to sneak away and see an early morning showing of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  We did not see it in 3-D or IMAX or Smell-O-Rama or whatever other extras it might come with on some screens.  So I can't comment on any of that.

What I did see was mostly amazing enough.  It reminded me a bit of the 70s Superman movies....a pretty good movie, but with some cliche dialogue and some cartoony villains.  But the essence of Spider-Man's character was there, and the spirit of what he does shone through.

Andrew Garfield, although an Australian, portrays the Queens residence Peter Parker as well as anyone I've seen.  The accent is believable, and his mannerisms both as Peter Parker and as Spider-Man are very fitting.  Emma Stone plays Gwen Stacy very well, and the fact that the two stars have a real life affection for each other permeates their scenes together, making them more believable, even through some of the corny dialogue.

Dane DeHaan does a solid turn as Harry Osborn/Green Goblin, portraying a growingly nastier descent into madness.  His screen time as the chief villain in the movie is too brief.  Jamie Foxx as Electro  is mostly a fail, not completely due to the actor, but to the way the part is written.  His early portrayal is unrealistically cartoony, giving his character an Urkelesque quality.  Both villains motivations seem sketchy and thin to me...they take very minor slights and exaggerate them into excuses to becoming irredeemably evil.

The fight scenes are good, not in the same world shaking awesome as Captain America, but they are pretty good.

I will not spoil any particular major plot points.  I will say, like Game of Throne readers see in the television series, central things that the books do, happen in the show as well - the show does "go there".  For long time fans of Spider-Man, yes, the story does "go there".

All in all, although not a perfect movie, it is a definitely positive addition to the Spider-Man canon and definitely worth seeing.  And if you see it in it's souped-up version (3-D, IMAX, etc) please let us know if you thought it was worth it.

With great weekend trips with Doug, comes great viewings of movies in their first weekends out!  Huzzah!
