There are awards designed just for Rippers! These are the Saturn Awards that will be presented in June, honoring the very best in different genre oriented categories of entertainment. No two hours movies of people drinking tea here! Just good old fashioned melodrama and entertainment!
Last week I presented the category of Science Fiction films, and expressed my opinion the Marvel's The Avengers was the best of the bunch. Chronicle also received Ripper support, and Prometheus starts on HBO this weekend so I hope to catch that.
This week, let's take a look at those movies nominated for Best Fantasy Film:
Best Fantasy Film:
- "The Amazing Spider-Man"
- "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"
- "Life of Pi"
- "Ruby Sparks"
- "Snow White and the Huntsman"
- "Ted"
I have seen the first two movies on the list and enjoyed each. The Amazing Spider-Man was pretty good, but having followed Spider-Man in comics, television and movies for the last forty plus years, you sometimes get tired of the countless remakes. That being said, the movie had a certain oomph and young energy to it.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was great, a marvelous introduction to the classic story. I can't believe they're going to get three movies out of it, but I am just going to sit back, relax and enjoy each and every one.
I have not seen Life of Pi, although I have read the book. I suspect that this is the best movie of the lot, and would be the most likely winner. Benjamin, my 12 year old son, saw it and enjoyed it a great deal. I am going to try to make it a priority to see before the award show in June.
Ruby Sparks I had not heard of before, but the premise is where a lonely writer creates a female character so vibrant she comes to life. I don't think this is a winner, but I do think it will be worth checking out.
Snow White and the Huntsman is out now on DVD and other services, so I hope to catch that. The feedback that I get from friends that have seen it is that is a good but not great movie, not in the same league as the first three movies in this category.
I have no desire to see Ted, the movie about a foul-mouthed teddy bear.
There you have it! The nominees for Best Fantasy Film! Did they leave any out that you would like mentioned? And no, I have no idea why The Avengers is in the Science Fiction category and Spider-Man is in fantasy.
I will try and cover another category next week. Meanwhile, I would LOVE to have your input! What is your favorite fantasy movie of the year? Comment here or on Facebook if you are part of Ripping Good Yarns or my general Facebook feed.
