It's Time to Break Up the Tide!

Break up the Yankees!

Yes, during the time when the Yankees dominated baseball, the cry would go out to break up the players on this team so that other teams would have a chance.  The Yankees had the largest media market, and in the days before revenue sharing, the could buy all the best players and return to the World Series year after year.  Great if you were a Yankees fan, not so hot if you were anybody else.

So this is Alabama's third national championship in four years.  Break 'em up!

Just kidding!  Every year there is high turnover anyways.  The players stay no more than four years (or is it five...never really have understood red-shirting).And if Alabama recruits better than everybody else, as long as it's not done illegally, what can you do?

Colleges operate like unaffiliated minor league franchises, with only a tiny fraction going on to the pros.  It has little to do with academics anymore, although occasionally some schools do try to put a facade up.  Penn State had excellent graduation rates, but that doesn't mean the program wasn't corrupt in other ways.

I have watched less college football over the years, and a lot more pros.  Except for some school loyalty like to the Michigan Wolverines and Georgia Bulldogs.  The rest I find hard to watch, and unlike some sports I tend to be a shallow fan.  If my teams are being shut out of the national championship I tend to lose interest.  And of course, my disinterest is fueled by the lack of playoff structure.

Whatever it is that the  BCS is doing, for the top four teams or whatever, really still doesn't cut for me.  The way things are right now, three out of the four teams that qualify could be SEC teams.  That may be OK with most of the fans down here, but it's not OK with me.

I would rather have an eight team championship with the at least five to six of the slots going to conference champions.  You win the Big Tan championship you go.  You win PAC 10 you go.  You win the SEC, you go.  Then you can have two to three wild cards to fill out the slate.  I'm sorry to all of you who think that the playoffs should be wall to wall SEC teams.  Conference championships should mean something.

So roll,Tide, roll.  Recruit your heart out.  Someday a fierce blue wave is gonna roll over you!

One can dream,.
